"In Concert, Liliana Porter creates a quietly surreal vignette that blurs the line between reality and illusion. The work combines etching, collage, and delicate hand coloring to depict a small porcelain figurine playing an accordion beside a calmly seated deer. At first glance, the scene appears deceptively simple—but closer inspection reveals a subtle rupture in perception: the deer’s ear, a small, collaged element, physically lifts from the paper, casting a real shadow that challenges our sense of what is printed, what is painted, and what is materially present. The pairing feels at once whimsical and uncanny—sweet, yet subtly unsettling. Porter’s restrained composition and use of white space draw attention to these small interventions, inviting viewers into a world where innocence, performance, and illusion coexist in gentle tension,” writes Amy Raehse, Director at Goya Contemporary. “As is true of all her work, Porter brings her signature blend of wit, restraint, and quiet surrealism to a minimalist stage, inviting the viewer into a world where play, memory, and existential pause collide in perfect motionlessness."
